Every year, I decide on a new style of wrapping for all my Christmas gifts. I find it really fun coming up with new creative designs, combinations, techniques, and decorations to wrap up the gifts I give to people. It also happens to be a pretty cool way of distinguishing which gifts under the tree came from me! This is what my DIY gift wrapping for Christmas 2023 looks like – and I’m here to show you how to get the look!
DIY Wrapping Paper
I love a gift wrapped in Kraft paper. It makes me feel like I’m receiving a charming, old parcel in the mail! This year, I decided to make custom DIY wrapping paper. I started by measuring my piece of paper for the particular box I was wrapping. I used this specific Kraft paper by Scotch (big fan as it’s high quality, affordable, thick, and not see-through at all!). Next, I painted simple, single brushstrokes across the whole surface – using gold paint, of course. Nothing perfect, just one or two swipes of the brush. Keep it really relaxed and organic feeling.
I love the similarity in tone that the gold has with the brown paper, yet the stark difference they have in sheen and finish. It’s really interesting how the light catches the reflective metallic paint against the matte paper from different angles! This Iridescent Bronze paint from Golden dries very quickly too, so by the time I was done painting, I was ready to wrap my present as usual.
Twisted Twine For Bows
Normally, plain jute twine is my go-to for bows. Again “charming old parcel” is the vibe. (I also always have it around the house, so ribbons are one less thing I have to buy.) This year though, because of the gold paint on the Kraft paper, I found the combination too tonal. I wanted a little extra contrast! To remedy the situation, I decided to cut two strands each of twine and of black yarn and to twist the two together. It gives emo candy cane vibes. We love. After tying one twist lengthwise and the other twist crosswise, just tie a simple bow and cut off any excess string.
Black Name Tags With Gold Lettering
Name tags are something I never buy. Card stock of some colour is always in my house, so I opt to make my own! In order to tie this whole look together, the name tags needed to be black. The black tag has high contrast against the tonal brown and gold wrapping paper, and it also ties in the black yarn from the emo candy cane twists. I wrote the recipients names in gold Sharpie to tie the look together even further – picking up on the gold brushstrokes on the paper.
That’s what all of my gifts for Christmas 2023 look like under the tree this year! I hope this inspires you to DIY your own gift wrapping or that you try any of these techniques for yourself.
